Ingredient Explained; Sea Buckthorn

Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is one of those true wonders. A thorny, deciduous, temperate bush plant native to European and Asian countries. The fruit, yellow or orange berries, are sought for their strong physiological attributes. Highly prized in areas of the world where citrus fruit are uncommon, due to the high level of vitamin C. The oil pressed from these berries if what gives the colour to many of our products!

So what makes Sea Buckthorn a key ingredient?

  • Vitamins - the berries contain 25 times more Vitamin C than an orange (for collagen production and maintenance and it works as a potent antioxidant). It also contains Vitamin E (to fight of free radicals and reduce any signs of aging) and Vitamin K (helps the body heal bruises and wounds).

  • Nutrients - trade elements calcium (if there is a lack of calcium in the skin, it will prevent it from regenerating new skin cells resulting in dry, fragile looking skin), iron (will give your skin a healthy glow and it supports the wound healing process), magnesium (known to calm inflammation) and potassium (is key for the skin through maintaining the electrolyte balance and internal fluids which helps keeping skin cells hydrated and internally moisturised)

  • Fatty Acids - the main unsaturated fatty acids palmitoleic acid (omega 7), linoleic acid (omega 6), alpha linolenic (omega 3) and oleic acid (omega 9), all supporting the skin in many ways - eliminates signs of dry, flaky skin, calms signs of redness and sensitivity, increases hydration and visibly strengthen the skin against external influences and damage.

The health benefits of the Sea Buckthorn are endless and works fantastically in our products. Its success in supporting the skin has become more widely known so we are proud to be able to say we were early adopters when we started our range many, many years ago!
